Rowena had been about to flee. There were no words that could describe the horror before her, in the chamber that was her sister’s laboratory. She hadn’t been at all surprised that Vanessa was working for the Nazis, but this… this was inhuman in every sense of the word. The people were barely recognizable as people. She could hear Shelby outside, puking his guts out. Rowena knew she’d soon be joining her classmate.
The worst part was that the victims of those twisted experiments were still alive, still feeling. And Rowena could feel everything they felt, and she knew that there was nothing she could do to save them. All she could offer was a quick death.
“Bitte… bitte, frauline…”
Rowena stepped deeper into the chamber of horrors, following the weak voice.
She found him attached to one of the machines, hanging from it by thin straps and the wires running in to his pale, freckled skins. The only thing he wore was a gold Star of David hanging on a chain around his thin neck. He was too thing, and someone had shaved all the hair from his body, leaving only traces of red fuzz. He looked at her with wide blue eyes. “Bitte…” he croaked.
Rowena reached for the wires running from the machine to the boy. He sobbed dryly as she pulled the wires free. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I’m gonna get you out of here. God, can you even understand -- Shelby! Nate! Anyone! I need some help here!”
Blood welled from where she’d pulled the wires free, and she started on the straps. He fell free, and Rowena staggered uner his weight. “It’s gonna be alright, I’ll get you out of here,” she whispered in his ear. She could feel his pain, his terror.
