Geoffrey Wilder watched Frank Dean meticulously shuffle the cards and deal them out. Stacy Yorkes snatched her cards up and studied them with a blank look on her face. He hated to admit it, but the time traveler was one of the best card players he’d ever met… unlike her husband, whom she had forbidden from ever playing again.
Geoffrey glanced at his cards, then turned his attention back to his fellow players. Victor had his lips pursed, and he was scratching the apparently permanent scraggly stubble that covered his chin, making him look like a grown up version of Shaggy. Frank was studying his cards and muttering under his breath in his native tongue. Another glance at his cards, and Geoffrey’s confidence grew. With the Minorus and the Hayeses banned from the game, his victory was assured. He’d been fleecing people at this came since he was a child. These suckers didn’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell.
Stacy tossed a few pennies into the pot, and Geoffrey almost laughed out loud at himself. They were playing for practically nothing… but it never hurt anything to stay in practice.
Only respectable people cheat at cards just because they can, he thought. When he was younger, he would never have so much as thought about cheating at a penny anti game like this.
