What are the three best books you have ever read and what are the three worst? What made them so good or bad?

The best three, in no particular oder:

1. Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom

I know I mention this book every time a book needs mentioning, but it's just that damn amazing. I read within a few short hours and read it again whenever I need to remember that, sure the big things in life are important, but so are the little things.

2. The Howling by Gary Brandner

I read this book back in secondary one (seventh grade) and it was the first piece of werewolf fiction I ever came across in my then-thirteen years that got it right. Now, in my twenty-one years, it's still the only piece of fiction to have ever gotten werewolves right, and for that it will always be one of my all time favorites.

3. American Star by Jackie Collins

This book was a lot of firsts for me. Also read in sec one, t was the first book I read that had graphic sex in it. It was the first book I read with excessive swearing in it. It was the first book to give me a taste of the real world. Overall, though, it was the first book to make me believe that if you really love somebody and if you're really meant to be with that person, you'll find your way back to each other eventually.

The worst three, in no particular order:

1. Twilight by Stephanie Meyer

I feel bad for disliking this saga as much as I do, especially considering a friend bought me the first two books for my birthday two years ago. I might have liked it, had the writing not been so bad. I could easily overlook every single sparkly flaw, but the writing killed my brain. It felt like I was reading bad fanfiction written by a twelve year old. :(

2. I'm actually not sure what this one was called, but I think it was Second Sight. I have no idea who wrote it. I read it during sec one (before I discovered The Howling), and it was about a girl who could see spirits and such, but I remember it just going in circles. I gave up on it halfway through 'cause it was so boring.

3. Vulcan! by Kathleen Sky

Reading this, I felt like I was reading a Mary Sue self-insert fic. Dr. Katalya Tremain is a very predictable creation, from her tragic past, to her super amazing smarts and beauty, to the way two members of the Enterprise bicker to gain her attention and affection. Seriously, it was really bad. Don't read it, not even for shits and giggles.

If I'm not over you by the time I get to Georgia
Then I guess I'll be Alabama bound
There was a time when I'd do anything for you
But this time, baby, I won't turn around

I always wanted to get married, and I thought you were the one
But you never, ever asked me, and I was tired of hangin' on
You know a girl can only be let down so many times before she runs
And now this little bitty town's only got room for one of us, yeah

You always said I'd never leave, and if I did I wouldn't go far
So I know how I must look, with my tank 'a gas and beat up heart
Well baby, I'm gone for good, you can count on that
Yeah, I'm gonna keep headin' west 'til I'm too far gone to come back, yeah

And If I'm not over you by the time I get to Georgia
Then I guess I'll be Alabama bound
There was a time when I'd do anything for you
But this time, baby, oh I won't turn around

I only got ten miles to go before I cross the state line
I can feel my hands shakin'
'Cause they usually turn the wheel around about this time
I heard that same ol' voice inside, I had to drown it out
So I found me a radio station playin' something fast
And I turned it up real loud

And If I'm not over you by the time I get to Georgia
Then I guess I'll be Alabama bound
There was a time when I'd do anything for you
But this time, baby, oh I won't turn around

There was a time when I'd do anything for you
But this time, baby, oh I won't turn around
No, I won't turn around

If I'm not over you by Georgia, then I'll head to Alabama
Roll on to Mississippi, or maybe Lou'siana
I'll drive all the way to California
Oh, I won't turn around
No, I won't turn around
No, I won't turn around
No, I won't turn around (turn around, turn around)
I won't, I won't turn around, (no) I won't turn around

I'm doing a dry run of my Christmas meal*. Actually that's just the excuse I told myself when I bought a two leg portion of duck for $7. Om nom nom duck. I've never managed to make it properly myself though. We'll see how I go this time.

Also I've changed my 0 gauge earrings for the first time! Awesome Piercer Scott said they were looking good, so I went for it. My right ear is a tad tender and swollen today though. Apparently it's normal for one ear to be fine and one to be more delicate, like it's normal to have one foot bigger than the other, but still. I've put my glass plugs back in, I'm going to wear these as my basics I think, and changing them to go out. I couldn't resist putting in my ebony spirals when I went shopping, though. I'm-a having fun :-)

* my personal Christmas tradition: a totally, ridiculously indulgent meal, DVDs of stuff I've been wanting to watch for ages, and not getting out of my pjs all day, all on my own (with Loki duh). I love it so much. By the sounds of it I'm the only person at work looking forward to Christmas day!

I kinda love her, sure. There's a lot of great fic out there, either featuring her or with her as a fabulous supporting character. I read it. I bookmark it. I love it.

However, there's just one thing that confuses me about all this Gaila love; I didn't say anything before because I thought maybe I was mistaken, so I waited until I saw the movie again and now I'm sure:

Gaila's dead.

No, really. She wasn't on the Enterprise. The last time we see her, she gives Uhura an excited grin and goes off to her assigned shuttle, and Uhura heads in a different direction to go to the Enterprise shuttles and confront Spock. Therefore, Gaila was on one of the ships that the Narada destroyed.

Now, I have seen one fic -- and only one -- where the author has this be the case. They have Gaila survive in a piece of debris, needing massive reconstructive surgery and winding up as Pike's assistant, which I found kinda cute. And that's a clever way to go, given as there were some pretty hefty chunks o' ship that the Enterprise had to navigate past when they arrived at Vulcan... But there's a problem with that, too.

Even if Gaila survived in a piece of debris, that debris was floating around Vulcan which was turned into a black hole. It, and she, would have been sucked in.

So Gaila is gone.

Although I would happily read her adventures in a reboot!TNG 'verse where somehow she got spat back out again.

Meanwhile, I'll just consider all the fic where she survived and/or was on the Enterprise as minor AUs in that respect. Because I love reading about her -- but I just had to confront the fandom's case of denial.

Okay, Death Cab? This is the most least mellow you've been, but you're still as romantic and obsessive as before. I LOVE IT. And the bass, *flutters* so nice.

But don't fret, this is still a Twilight-themed post. This song, Meet Me On the Equiniox is the lead single on the New Moon soundtrack. Now SRSLY, these movies have amazing song choices (aka the soundtrack).

It's funny, actually, how backwards this franchise is. There are two common 'rules of thumb' for movies (and by movies I can only really judge Hollywood ones). First, the originals are always better than the remakes, whether the source material is another movie or a book, the original is always the best. Examples: Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Internal Affairs. Second, the score is better than the soundtrack. Score being the musical background made specifically for the movie by a composer, soundtrack the list of songs by other artists that accompany the movie. Not necessarily in the film, but thematically tied to it. Example: Chronicles of Narnia. Yeah, not a lot of evidence of this one, but that's because few movies release both a soundtrack & a score. Most just focus on the score. UNLIKE THIS FILM.

Yeah... I'd better finish the film.

Twilight, the second half )

Hurm. So Twilight was an alright movie. There were some genuine moments, but the basic love story was really plain. Trying to make it more interesting or 'jazz it up' with vampires? Okay, I guess. I could run with it, except every vamp has a superpower? Nope. Not working. And the tracker vamp? BORING.

Thematically, this story would have been better if it was a mildy-neurotic Bella with a disinterest for life found something worth living for. In the end she still had the death wish. Kinda lame.

I'm still waiting for Meyer to release the Edward-based book. I think that'd be much better than this Bella-based story. Sometimes I forget she's the main character because Edward is busy being AWESOME AND RUSTIC.

Overall, I think this movie was made much stronger with the lack of Stephanie Meyer's narration, oh whoops, Bella's narration, a solid director, and a great supporting cast. I'm not inclined to watch New Moon right away because they swapped this director for an 'action-guy' who's probably gonna load it up with cheesecake and fanwank instead of focusing on the 'it's a love story' aspect.

EDIT: HOLY SHIT. The song during the credits is Radiohead? That's. Not. Karma Police. WHOA. SO AWESOME, YET SO DIFFERENT. I need In Rainbows, like, now.
