Victor came to stand in front of the glowing portal, watching the energy crackle around the gate like an ice cold fire (it sounded impossible, even in Victor’s mind but that really was the only way he could logically perceive it). On the other side was home. His family, his friends, everyone he cared about was waiting there on the other side.

Except, of course…

“You’d better hurry,” Billy said, the pain in his voice like a knife to Victor’s heart. “It’s gonna close soon.”

Billy couldn’t go through the portal. He would be stuck here, possibly for the rest of his life.

“Vic, you gotta go! You may never get another chance.”

“Billy…”

“Tell Teddy that I love him for me, okay?”

“No,” Victor whispered, letting the portal shut down rather than step through and leave Billy behind.
